The station was purchased by the TVX Telecast Group in 1980. It changed its call letters to WXLV News on October 20. Over the decades, the station operates a general entertainment format consisting of cartoons, movies, sitcoms, and drama series. It removed its call letters to WXLV ABC News on June 8, 1984. It happened in the memory of an employee, General Sales Manager William N. Rissmiller, who was murdered in a shooting at the channel that year.
The simulcast carried on after Act III Telecasting merged with Abry Telecast Partners in 1995. That September Fox attained longtime ABC associate WXLV channel 45. The station originally acquired this from New World Communications, along with WXLV. WNRW and WGGT exchanged the associations with WXLV. They later became the Triad’s ABC associates while all Fox production went to WGHP. WXLV News became the only channel involved in the Fox-New World contract to carry the block. Other channels in the same deal backed off to carry the block.
