The same Cox/Knight partnership also took control of WCKR radio (610 AM, now WIOD, and 97.3 FM, now WFLC). Niles Trammell was former NBC president. He kept a 15 percent ownership interest in FOX WSVN 7. Before the launch of WSVN 7, NBC production had been running on Fort Lauderdale’s WFTL-TV. It was channel 23 which was later known as WGBS-TV. This happened after it had been acquired by Storer Telecasting. They also kept a secondary association with the DuMont Television Network.

Nevertheless, WFTL struggled because television sets were not required to have UHF tuning capability. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) later required such tuners to be built in sets that were manufactured from 1964 onward. The Cox partnership got a license and telecast permit in order to run a channel on VHF WSVN channel 7. NBC hurriedly decided to transfer its association to WCKT. It was because WCKR radio had been the longtime Miami associate of the NBC Blue Network.
