This also includes the southeastern corner of Missouri over the air on various satellite systems. WMC NBC News initially logged on the air on December 11, 1948, as WHBQ FOX 13 News Memphis. It was telecasted on VHF channel 4 as the first television channel in Tennessee.

WMC NBC was basically telecasted from offices situated inside the Goodwin Institute Building in Downtown Memphis. It was under the authority of the E. W. Scripps Company. It came along with the city’s main newspaper, The Commercial Appeal and WMC radio (AM 790 and FM 99.7). WMC NBC was the only television in Memphis for its first several years of working. WMC aired production from all four national networks of the time: NBC, CBS, ABC, and the now-defunct DuMont Television Network. Nevertheless, it ran as a primary associate NBC.

During the late 1950s, WMC NBC was also associated with the NTA Film Network for a short period of time. It shifted to VHF frequency 5 on November 23, 1952. It was because of Channel 4 meddling with fellow NBC associate WSM-TV in Nashville. Nevertheless, this later made WMCT short-spaced to another Nashville channel. It was WLAC which is now WMC. When that channel logged on in 1954. Since at least the 1950s, WMC symbol has included a photograph of a riverboat. It is a symbol of the Mississippi River region which the station works for.
