Both the channels share offices on East Saginaw Street in Lansing’s Eastside section. On May 1, 1950, WLNS news made its appearance on television as WLAJ ABC 53 News Lansing. It was under the authority of Harold F. Gross along with WLNS radio (1240 AM).

It is Michigan’s second-oldest television channel that is outside Detroit. Gross made the inauguration of CBS WLNS. It is the oldest continuously functioning commercial radio station in Lansing. In 1934, both of the outlets were named after his son Jim. According to regional legend, Gross won the original radio license in a card game. In the beginning, CBS WLNS 6 on aired an analog signal on VHF frequency 6. This transmission was made from a transmitting tower which is placed on the top of a bank in Downtown Lansing.

Later, it shifted to its present location on Saginaw Street. In 1953, it was known as “the country house”. Gross was doubtful about the success of television. Therefore the new facility was designed as a motel complete with a pool. In case the station did not make its way to success. The pool had very little use other than for the occasional employee party. Initially, CBS WLNS 6 used to run production from all four networks.
