KTUU is one of the first two TV channels to sign on in Alaska (the other being CBS associate KTVA, frequency 11), signing on October 16, 1953, as KFIA. It became KENI-TV in 1955, and then KTUU on June 10, 1981. On September 19, 1966, KTUU earned the rank of becoming the first television in Alaska that ran its transmission in color. It was the time when it aired the premiere episode of the ABC sitcom That Girl.

KTUU News had a joint main association with NBC and ABC. On October 1, 1967, the channel interchanged to ABC association. While on a secondary level to CBS.
