From the beginning, WKZO Grand Rapids had function problems due to the presence of WTMJ-TV across Lake Michigan. In 1953, WWMT CBS shifted to channel 4. After that network shut down WWMT CBS News lost DuMont in 1956. Soon after that, the WWMT CBS News relocated their production to an old car dealership on West Maple Avenue in Kalamazoo. Here the channel rests based to this day. In 1960, Fetzercon structed a new 1,100-foot transmitting tower near the northern edge of Gun Lake. The new tower was close enough to Grand Rapids to offer it with city-grade coverage. It was able to do so while still being within 15 miles of Kalamazoo as required by Federal Communications Commission regulations.
