WREG CBS News was originally under the authority of electrical engineer and radio dealer Hoyt Wooten. They had applied for one of the first television permits in the country in 1928. The call letters stood for Wooten’s radio store, the Wooten Radio-Electric Company. It was where he had launched WREG radio in 1922. WREG took the CBS association from WHBQ-TV. It earned a handsome return on his original investment of 40 years earlier. In return, Cowles auctionedCBS 3 WREGto The New York Times Company in 1971. Cowles later auctioned the radio channels to other interests. After four years, the Times Company constructed new office facilities for WREG on one of the highest points on Chickasaw Bluff. It overlooked the Mississippi River.
