The WOOD NBC logged on the air on August 15, 1949, as WLAV-TV. It was basically telecasting on VHF channel 7. The WOOD NBC News was the fourth television in Michigan and the first situated outside of Detroit. It was initially under the authority of Grand Rapids businessman Leonard Adrian Versluis. In 1940 he had also logged-on Grand Rapids’ second radio station, WOOD NBC (1340 AM, now WJRW). In 1951, Versluis sold the station to Grandwood Telecasting for $1.37 million. The Bitner Group subsidiary was also the holder of NBC WOOD. It was the first radio channel in the city.

In reality, the application for WLAV News had been one of the last construction permits issued before the freeze.
