WHNT CBS started functioning on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1963. It was the first new channel to be inaugurated after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. WHNT CBS News has been a CBS associate for its whole existence. It is the only Huntsville-area channel to have never altered its association. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) initially certified the frequency for WHNT to the city of Fort Payne some 40 miles (64 km) to the southeast. The channel was launched by a former employee of Birmingham channel WAPI which is now NBC WAFF 48 News Huntsville. The man was Charles Grisham who is now deceased. He later added two other Southern channels, WSLA in Selma, Alabama and WHNT CBS in Columbus, Georgia, to his collection.

WHNT CBS News first used 16 mm film for most of its commercial and news gathering. In 1979, it switched to the 3/4 inch videotape format. WHNT used this system until 1998 when new Panasonic DVC machines and cameras were purchased. In 1980, Grisham auctioned WHNT CBS to The New York Times Company. They ran it for over a quarter century. WHNT services were relocated from Monte Sano Mountain to downtown Huntsville in 1987. The move was provoked by a fire that destroyed rival CBS WAFF-TV (station 48) offices. The transmitting tower is kept onMonte Sano. It is because the mountain provides the highest elevation in the immediate area.
