WFMY was initially under the authority of the Greensboro News Company. They were the publishers of the Greensboro Daily News and Daily Record.

In 1965, the News Company was bought by the company that ultimately became a Breakthrough in Communications. The channel was attained by Harte-Hanks Communications in 1976. Harte-Hanks sold the channel to the Gannett Company in 1989.
In October 2012, Gannett got itself in a clash against Dish Network. It was regarding compensation fees and Dish’s Auto-Hop commercial-skip feature on its Hopper digital video recorders. Gannett declared that Dish discontinues Auto-Hop. The reason was that it was affecting advertising revenues for WFMY. Gannett threatened to take back its channels like CBS WFMY.

WFMY CBS has been the main CBS associate from its log-on. It also firstly carried secondary associations with NBC, ABC, and Du-Mont. NBC production was shifted to WSJS-TV when it logged on in September 1953. WFMY also shared the ABC association with WSJS until October 1963. It was after WGHP (channel 8, now a Fox associate) logged on. WFMY CBS ended the Du-Mon tassociation when that network ended functioning in 1956.
