On September 10, 1954, KUTV CBS News made its first transmission on the air. In the beginning, it ran its production as an associate of ABC. The channel was originally under the authority of Frank C. Carman & Associates and The Salt Lake Tribune. It was run the by the Kearns-Tribune Corporation. Initially, KUTV CBS News was broadcasted from offices situated on Social Hall Avenue in the south of the city.

The contract was organized by Tribune publisher John F. Fitzpatrick. The deal was made after his experience with two successful investments in regional radio. This included KSL radio and KWDZ. In 1956, A.L. Glassman bought shares of KUTV CBS news from the Carman group. It was sold for the Ogden Standard-Examiner and his son-in-law and daughter, George and Gene Hatch. The channel was reformed and till 1970, the Kearns-Tribune Corporation kept its 35% shareholdings.
