In July 1953, he got approval from FCC for construction permits. On December 11, 1953, CBS KTVA went on the air. It started its transmission from 2 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. KTVA CBS News had its offices on the first floor. The transmitting tower is located on top of the pink 14-story McKinley Tower. It transmits an analog signal on VHF channel 22.

By the end of the 1960s, KTVA CBS aired some shows from NBC. This kept on going until, in 1970, KHAR-TV took association with NBC. In the 1950s, KTVA CBS News was an associate of DuMont. By the end of the 1950s, KTVA was associated with the NTA Film Network for a short period of time. KTVA also ran Sesame Street from 1970. This kept on going until KAKM logged on in 1975. On January 3, 1971, KTVA aired Port’s very first live satellite telecast. This transmission was made from the U.S. mainland. It was the 1970 NFC Championship Game.
