Before that, ABC had been transferred to off-hours authorizations on NBC associated channel KLRJ/KORK-TV. This also included CBS associate KLAS-TV also known as channel 8. In 1979, KSHO was bought by WTMJ, Inc. It is the telecasting division of The Journal Company. The purchase made it Journal’s second television channel property. The change altered its callsign to KTNV ABC News on March 2, 1980. The -TV suffix was removed from 1988 to 2009.

KTNV News initially transferred its signal from a tower situated right outside the station. It was at the crossing of Desert Inn Road and Valley Boulevard, on the quadruple border of the city of Las Vegas. This further extended to Spring Valley, Paradise, and Winchester. The tower is an exclusive and visible landmark all the way through the Las Vegas Valley. On July 30, 2014, it was declared that the E. W. Scripps Company would purchase Journal Communications in an all-stock business. Scripps kept the two companies’ telecast properties.

This included KTNV News, and spin off its print properties as part of Journal Media Group. The FCC accepted the contract on December 12, 2014. It was authorized by shareholders on March 11, 2015. The merger was finalized on April 1, 2015. It came with its new related channel KNXV in Phoenix. Along with came it’s existing Tucson related channel KGUN.Thissuccessfullygave E.W. Scripps a monopoly for ABC network. It benefited its production across the wide geographical area of Southern Nevada and most of the state of Arizona.
